General Information: The library is the headquarters of the Galax-Carroll regional Library system organized in 1982. It is governed by a board of six members, three for each locality appointed by the respective governing bodies. It is a member of the MtN-Cat automation consortium combining a catalog of holdings with the Wythe-Grayson Regional Library system.

Registration: Anyone may register for a library card by presenting identification showing his/her current address and completing a registration form. Children between 4 and 18 years of age must have a parents signature or a valid driver's license. Library patron charge cards are issued for one year and can be renewed at the end of the year. A replacement fee of $2 is charged if the card has to be replaced.

Loan Period: The library lends books, recordings, magazines and pamphlets for 21 days. Video cassettes and equipment items (projectors, screen, overheads, etc.) are loaned for three days.

Number of Volumes: There are more than 23,500 materials in the library, including reference books, magazines and other resources. The library subscribes to 71 periodicals and nine newspapers.

Renewals: All materials may be renewed once (except reserve list items and videos) either in person or by telephone.

Reserve Policy: Items currently in circulation (except videotape equipment) may be placed on reserve for registered patrons and picked up withinthree days of notification.

Children's Programs: The Children's Department conducts weekly pre-schooler story hours. There also is a weekly after school program for children. A Summer Reading Program is offered, with the other programs scheduled in celebration of Children's Books Week, National Library Week and holidays.

Number of Patrons: The library has more that 13,825 registered borrowers in the first half of 1998. It can now accept library cards from the Carroll, Grayson and Wythe libraries, enabling anyone in the area to reserve a book from these libraries free of charge. The library also served more than 18,000 participants in a variety of programs in 1997.

Personnel: There are three full-time employees and four part-time employees. There is also a literacy and children's outreach person and a senior outreach person to supply service to the region.

Future: A new regional Library building will be built on a lot next to the Vaughan Memorial Library in Galax and is set to open in the year 2000. The 15,000 square foot structure will allow the library to more than double its collection and will serve as headquarters of the Galax-Carroll Regional Library system.

For a glimpse of life in twin counties over the decades, visit our museum. Enjoy collections of Civil War veterans of the area. See over 10,000 pieces of local Native American artifacts, donated by Jeff Matthews and his family -with audio available about the collection. Many items honor Kylene Barker, who was the first Virginia contestant to win the title of Miss America (1978). See the collection of trophies of North American big game animals donated by Mr. Glenn Pless. See two authentic restored cabins, originally built about eight miles from Galax, near the New River. Housed on North Main Street in the old First Baptist Church (1907), the shop offers quality, handmade crafts by local, talented artisans. Quilts, crocheted items, pottery, dolls, jams and jellies, soap and more. The building also houses the services of the Community Action Agencies and the local food pantry. Located on North Main Street, the Farmer’s Market is open each Friday and Saturday morning - June 1 through mid-October. Local farmer’s artisans and bakers display and sell produce, baked and canned goods, handmade craft items and fresh floral arrangements. There is no fee for set up. Call the Director of Tourism at (276) 238-8130 for a vendor application.
